I have just finished looking at a tool that is as exciting as finding a true software expert lurking in your mailroom. The tool is composed of two volumes from IDII’s Phil Obal that gives an insiders advice on how to choose and evaluate a Warehouse Management System for a Third party provider. There are many WMS’s around that do a fine job on controlling a dedicated and private warehouse. The real trick is finding and evaluating a software system that helps when you have many customers with many different needs; customers that require varying levels of effort and space to take care of their business. You can end up in the “poorhouse” because of ignorance of inefficiencies and a lack of knowledge about costs and billing. This book can fill in the blanks and help you to systematize your operations.
Volume I of this series of two gives the reader a wealth of tips and tricks to figure out not only what you are buying but also what you SHOULD be buying. It shows what to look for and how to objectively evaluate what is offered to you. It is comparable to buying a private consultant for your exclusive use. Many valuable tips from someone who has made a career of following the market and the needs of the third party warehouse industry.
Volume II is a deep analysis of 40 possible vendors with contact personnel and an exhaustive analysis of their corporate experience as well as their strengths and weaknesses. It is a source book for possible suppliers to fill your needs. To do the research an any single one of these vendors would cost many times the price of the books.
In summary, the amount of useful knowledge in these books is amazing and a necessity to aid in an informed decision about the acquisition of a warehouse management system.

"I consider finding this book 'divine intervention'! I'm
so glad Phil finished the book before I started my search for a 3PL WMS software
solution. Phil has saved me countless phone calls, emails, and follow-ups
to software vendors.
I can not overstate how useful this book is to helping weed through the myriad of
software vendors and technical jargon. The book is so well laid out, that I
was able to cut right to the chase and shave my initial list of software
vendors from over a hundred down to seven!
Hats off to Phil for a tremendous amount of effort and a job
well done!"

"In this comprehensive workbook, all the steps are
listed that a logistics service provider should take in considering the purchase
of
packaged
software.
Except for a brief presentation of insights and tips,
as well as comparisons of installations and customer bases, nearly
90% of
the text is devoted to profiles of providers of WMS software.
As in previous
books
by the same auther, this text offers a no nonsense approach to
the task of selecting a vendor of warehouse management systems." Ken Ackerman
