QSM Study Examines the Best and Worst of Software Development Projects

A study of "the Best and Worst in Class" for software development projects was released by Quantitative Software Management, Inc.. The results offer many insights, including the assessment that the best in class projects are 3.37 times faster to market and 7.48 times cheaper than the worst.

QSM, which has been compiling detailed data across all major industry segments for nearly 20 years, said the study represents the latest three-year time slice for the data.

The costs and duration associated with being "best" or "worse" are dramatic: the construction and test portion (the build phase) of the project for best in class was around 3.6 months/$200,000, while the worst in class took a year and rang up $1.4 million. The total lifecycle costs (the requirements analysis plus the build phase) are also meaningful: just above 7.5 months/$300,000 total for the best in class, the worst in class taking over two years at a budget-busting $2.2 million.

Four major factors contributed to the results, and only one was technology-related. The rest concerned management and technology approaches. The factors included: controlling requirements change; highly-skilled people with good functional knowledge of the application domain; effective tooling; and effective project leadership.

Headwater Technology Solutions and Vocollect are launching a consortium to deliver Vocollect’s Voice-Directed Distribution for warehouse task management requirements in third party logistics (3PL) environments. “The consortium, made up of Headwater customers, has two main objectives,” said Joe Couto, Senior Vice-President at Headwater. “The members will work together to refine the existing voice-based application functions including order selection and fork-lift activities for the Headwater customer community. Secondly, it will create an ongoing forum between Headwater, Vocollect and our client base to drive future voice interface extensions into other applications.”

The uniqueness of this Headwater program will emphasize the extension of workflow or ‘process-logic’ based task management using Vocollect’s Voice-Directed Distribution within single and multi-party 3PL warehousing environments. The consortium program will employ Vocollect’s direct-to-WMS interface approach, leveraging the power of voice-driven dialog directly with the business logic within Headwater WMS. Targeted warehouse operations and 3PL logistics processes include the key elements of warehouse activity: unloading and receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking, loading and shipping, general moves, cycle counting, physical counting, and task interleaving. The ultimate objective is to automate all warehouse operations with Voice-Directed Distribution.

Warehouse Optimization LLC has released AutoVLB (Automatic Vehicle Load Builder). AutoVLB ensures that trucks are fully loaded to minimize the total transportation cost and that “must go” product is shipped on time.

AutoVLB takes customer or distribution requirements plans (CRP or DRP) and allocates these demands to trucks “optimally”. To date, load improvements over existing systems, combined with manual interventions, range from 4% to 18%, generating that many fewer truck shipments. Importantly, AutoVLB validates each load with the same technology that is used to direct loaders where to put product to meet axle weight constraints and minimize damage. In practice, this means loads can be shipped as designed. This is important because most vehicle loading and manual processes do not always recognize stacking restrictions and the potential for over-weight axles. AutoVLB represents a significant improvement in the way distribution or customer requirements are translated into efficient, damage-free truckloads.
