Walmart's RFID Tag Requirements

Walmart directs top 100 suppliers to use RFID by January 1, 2005.

The top 100 suppliers of Walmart represent an expansive product line and volume of product (8 billion tags a year). This move by Walmart validates the feasibility and reliability of low-cost RFID tags.

Manhattan's Associates is moving ahead with their RFID initiative "RFID in a Box" (see details below), which will assist many Walmart suppliers reach their goal.

New WMS RFP with 1,100 detailed questions. Version 8 covers all areas of WMS functionality and includes full question text with a time saving scorecard. New questions in version 8 cover configurability of Task Workflows for inbound receipts and outbound shipments. The ability to "configure" a set of tasks by part number, part condition, and order type is important. In addition, freight rate shopping questions have been extended for many scenario's (parcel, LTL, TL, TL with requirements). Application security questions have been added.   • American Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMSWA) announced that New Generation Computing Inc. (NGC), a subsidiary of American Software, introduced the 2003 version of e-SPS, Web-based strategic sourcing software that provides retailers, apparel manufacturers, brand managers and importers with end to-end visibility and the remote management of global production processes.

    The new version of e-SPS features enhanced user functions and reporting capabilities with its 11 software modules: e-Product Development, e-RFQ's & Bids, e-Pre Production, e-Production Tracking, e-Collaboration, e-Pack, e- Shipment Tracking, e-Exceptions, e-Quality, e-Executive Information Systems and Reporting, and Event Tracking and Management System. Using e-SPS, sourcing executives and vendors can exchange production data and complete steps in the production process, including product-development tasks, in real time via the Internet.

  • EXE Technologies (WMS, TMS, Slotting Optimization) will deliver EXceed on Linux-based computers from International Business Machines Corporation.
    Editor's Note: EXE's stock price is rapidly rising over the last few weeks. Various rumors are floating around. In our humble opinion, we would expect an ERP software vendor -OR- a large company or 3PL that needs 50 plus installations to purchase EXE.

  • HighJump Software, (WMS, YMS, TMS) announced the release of Supplier Advantage(TM), a supplier execution enablement tool that extends HighJump's trading partner enablement suite. This solution functions on a stand-alone basis and also integrates seamlessly with HighJump's applications, such as Warehouse Advantage(R), Transportation Advantage(TM) and Yard Advantage(TM).

    Supplier Advantage provides immediate ROI by optimizing activities, improving the efficiency of inbound goods management, and enhancing overall supplier relationships throughout the entire supply chain. This solution also decreases labor costs by streamlining receiving and data entry work. Furthermore, Supplier Advantage promotes proactive event management and issue resolution to reduce unexpected delays and expedited shipment costs.

  • Industri-Matematik International Corp. (WMS) announced IMI Warehouse 4.1, Among the new features in IMI Warehouse are extended capabilities to manage transport routes and link the warehouse operation to departure schedules. Also included is advanced support for recycling materials by enabling full control of packing materials and deposits received from vendors and other warehouses as well as packing material delivered to customers.

    Another new key feature is the comprehensive support of Advanced Shipping Notices (ASN) with detailed shipment-level information and content specifications per unique container. ASN support improves flexibility and efficiency by enabling the warehouse to act both as a pool point or cross-dock center for transit shipments, as well as a traditional order-based warehouse operation. All ASN information is exchanged via the XML-based messaging capabilities in the IMI supply chain suite, making it easy to integrate with other systems.

     

  • Manhattan Associates and Alien Technology Announce "RFID in a Box" Supply Chain Solution". The "RFID in a Box" solution includes all elements needed to begin initial deployment and utilisation of RFID technology. It includes RFID readers with two antennae per reader as well as a fixed number of RFID tags from Alien Technology Corp. to label and track goods. Customers will receive a limited licence version of Manhattan Associates' Trading Partner Management (TPM) application, allowing them to enable their suppliers to remotely generate RFID tags and apply them to goods. It also will include remote Electronic Product Code (EPC) printers to print the RFID tags.

  • Numbers Only, Inc. has partnered with Narain Mockenhaupt, Inc. to launch @Par Mobile Supply Chain Execution Suite for Lawson Applications. @Par adds real-time, wireless data collection functions to Lawson’s widely used and vertically focused industry solutions software. Designed to run on any Windows CEÓ based wireless handheld terminal, it streamlines the data collection and updating process during the Par Level Management, Receiving, Distributing, Put away, Pick, and Cycle Counts. Compatible with Lawson versions 7.2.3 or higher and supporting Windows CE and 802.11B standards, @Par can be deployed with the both the WLAN, GPRS/GSM, or the offline modes.

  • OMI International, Inc. announced has acquired assets of Supply Science, Inc. Supply Science is a software developer of forecasting technology enabling retail store management to better plan, control and maximize in-stock conditions based on intra-day item demand patterns and computer assisted ordering. The acquisition will enable OMI to become a key provider of advanced forecasting and replenishment solutions, and significantly broaden their application suite to include the handling and analysis of store-level point-of-sale demand data.

    Founded in 1996, the Supply Science team worked closely with leading retailers and manufacturers to create the DemandAnalytX - Demand-based Store Replenishment Software application and FORS - Demand-based Distribution Center Forecasting software. By accurately forecasting consumer demand and optimizing order quantities and their timing, the application enables retailers to maximize on-shelf availability, minimize inventory levels, reduce spoilage and obsolescence, improve sales and profits, and lower the cost of keeping shelves stocked. Using complex analytics, the application first optimizes inventories at the store, which impacts the amount of transportation and ultimately recommends distribution center inventory levels - all using demand-based point-of-sale data.


  • Prophet 21 (ERP, WMS) acquires Faspac Systems (ERP, Fastener Industry). For nearly 25 years, Faspac Systems has been a leading provider of enterprise software solutions and services for fastener distributors and manufacturers worldwide. Nearly 280 fastener distributors - the majority
    located in the United States, with several in Canada and Great Britain - utilize a Faspac Systems solution.

  • SAMSys Technologies and Intermec Sign Agreement to Build RFID Readers. Under this agreement, SAMSys will build and sell RFID readers in support of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for Material Handling and the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) Standard.

  • SSA Global Technologies, Inc.(ERP) announced it has acquired Ironside Technologies Inc., a provider of sell-side and buy-side eCommerce solutions will extend and strengthen SSA GT's existing product portfolio and become important components of SSA GT's customer relationship and supplier relationship strategies.

Warehouse space is—or at least should be—a hot topic in every facility. After all, you make daily decisions about product location, picking, putaway, shipping and receiving that all revolve around the layout and design of your facility. So how is your facility doing? Although dock doors and columns can’t be changed, there are some fundamental rules of thumb that will help you maximize the space in your warehouse. You’ll examine all of the elements for planning space on day one, and then on day two you’ll work in a group to redesign a fictional DC using the information you learned.
