WMS vs ERP - A Few More Differences - Part 5

We Missed A Few Differences!

Art Liebeskind of Howard Way Associates indicated that we missed a few WMS strong points that are commonly found missing in an ERP solution. These points include:
  1. The ability to assign status to inventory such as "quarantined for QC check".
  2. Extreme traceability by lot number or production code.
  3. A complete transaction history for error finding.
  4. A guided cycle counting module that triggers cycle counts depending on the SKU.
  5. The ability to perform a recall.
  6. The ability to easily change picking routes by means of a "pick sequence number" that is ASSOCIATED with an address. Orders are printed out or queued for RF or by pick sequence number.....No complicated algorithms to change...just change the sequence numbers for shortest path picking or special weight sequences that may over-ride short path. For example do not pick the potato chips and THEN the watermelons even though chips are more active than Watermelon. Crunch!.. These are the sort of practical things that ERP's do not have.

Our next issue will discuss ERP solutions that have some WMS functionality. If you missed the prior WMS vs ERP series, see Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 of this series at http://www.idii.com/esn/index.htm. If you need an exhaustive directory of WMS solutions, see Warehouse & Logistics Software Directory.

IDII thanks Art for the excellent remarks! Contact Art at Art@howardway.com or call (410) 542-4446.

COPLEX generates maximum savings for customers by continuously consolidating shipments into larger, more cost-effective loads considering optimal routing, mode selection, and carrier / facility constraints, and by looking for opportunities to route via consolidation and distribution hubs.
