WMS vs ERP - More Differences
- Part 4
WMS solutions continue to expand and many are expanding
into the TMS industry, either through partnership or an aquistion
of a TMS solution. Here is another view of differences
commonly found between WMS & ERP solutions.

Function |
WMS Functionality |
ERP Functionality |
14 |
Advanced Bin Locator |
Most WMS solutions have rule based bin
locator logic for determining the best bin to store newly
received product. This advanced bin locator logic evaluates
numerous rules, parameters, and setup configuration. The
Advanced Bin Locator evaluates product, bin, area, zone,
warehouse, owner, and inventory data. |
Limited and/or Not Supported. |
15 |
Slotting Optimization |
Some WMS solutions have added re-optimization
software that is built-in to the WMS or available as a separate
module. Warehouse managers frequently "re-warehouse"
inventory - to minimize travel time and optimize space utilization. |
Not Supported. |
16 |
Employee Certification Setup |
Most WMS solutions require a list of
valid tasks that employees are allowed to perform in the
warehouse. E.G., Cycle count, Putaway. Most WMS solutions
require a list of valid equipment that the employee is certified
to utilize. |
Not Supported. |
17 |
Labor Performance |
Some WMS solutions have engineered labor
standards and labor performance measurement tools. Many
of the WMS solutions today have labor reporting tools. |
Not Supported. |
18 |
Transportation Management System |
Most WMS solutions have TMS planning
software to optimize and consolidate freight. This goes
beyond parcel manifesting! |
Limited to Parcel Manifesting |
Parts 1,
2, and 3 of this series is available on prior newsletters

directory of WMS solutions. It is called the Warehouse

Technology & Software Product News
- Agile Software Corporation (Nasdaq:
AGIL, product lifecycle management (PLM)) announced acquisition of oneREV,
Inc. of Cupertino, California. The acquisition adds
important enabling technology which benefits Agile’s customers by speeding
the exchange of information between AgileTM systems and external information
sources, including information from supply chain partners, from customers’
internally maintained information warehouses, or from external supplier
catalogs.
Agile Software Corporation (Nasdaq: AGIL, PLM) announced Agile
Product Cost ManagementTM 8.5. AgileTM Product Cost Management
is unique among direct materials sourcing solutions in two ways: it
is the only such solution to integrate to the product record, and it
is the only direct materials sourcing offering which provides cost management
visibility across a multi-tiered supply chain.
- Automation Associates Canada, Inc.
(WMS) announced RF Pathways 3PL Billing Module. “The
RF Pathways Billing Module is specifically designed to save 3PL providers
time and money by interfacing with the appropriate modules, collecting
the transaction data and performing an accurate calculation of chargeable
entries. Three tables and a task manager are set up for the specific
client and every billable entry is tracked. A general work table for
codes or unique identifiers particular to that task can be created.
A second table associates codes to customers and modified prices can
be retained on a task-by-task basis for that customer. A billing detail
module allows the user to gather up standard or custom routines and
create templates or new billing statements on the fly. A final separate
module calculates space-usage by referencing location function details
for every location that you choose to define. Reports can be printed
or exported in electronic file format. An optional interface can also
be supplied to interface the RF Pathways Billing Module to your ERP
or financial package.
- Cadre Technologies (WMS, OMS, TMS,
3PL) announced Cadence Web Order system. The new web
storefront connects users directly to the Cadence Warehouse Management
and Order Management systems to build orders, check order status and
acquire product information. Cadence Web Order organizes customer specific
product catalogs for users to search for and select products, add them
to shopping carts, build quotes and orders, and check inventory availability.
All product information, customer records, and inventory status is contained
in the centralized Cadence database.
Cadence Web Order provides many features including catalog drill-downs,
product images and style sheets, multiple shipping addresses/distribution
lists, order templates for recurring orders, availability by either
quantity or yes/no confirmation, electronic file items for distribution
of documents, and complementary item/up-sale recommendation. It is
highly configurable to allow variable themes and order rules for different
clients and their customers.
- CYBRA's MarkMagic/400 Bar Code Label Software MaxiCode PCL
Option has been certified compliant with the UPS MaxiCode label standard.
The MaxiCode PCL optional feature lets MarkMagic/400 customers combine
UPS shipping labels with pick tickets on the same document.
MaxiCode is a two-dimensional, machine-readable, package label
code that is able to store up to 100 characters on a one-inch
square. The utilization of the MaxiCode enables UPS to drastically reduce
its data entry needs for shipping information. The address and shipping
information is then retrieved by portable computers and directly transmitted
to UPS. Furthermore this system minimizes the risk of data entry errors.
MaxiCode is even readable on wrapped or angled surfaces, which makes
it much more user friendly then 1D, linear bar codes.
- Epicor (ERP, NASDAQ: EPIC) announces
Vista 6.0 for both Microsoft SQL Server and Progress
RDBMS (Relational Database Management System). New Version Offers Enhanced
Supply Chain Visibility, Contact Management, Inventory Management and
Quality Assurance Capabilities.
- J.D. Edwards (ERP, SCM, CRM) Adds New
Supply Chain Event Management Capabilities to Its Production and Distribution
Planning Application. Select partners can edit the PDP-generated
planning information through a collaborative Web client so changes will
be reflected in the most recent production and distribution schedules.
The new SCEM capabilities also allow users to make recommendations and
modify rules and responsibilities in real time, enabling all parties
to be involved in the decision-making process. These enhanced systems
generate alerts, enabling production and distribution managers to respond
to deviations from the plan before they adversely impact the bottom
line.
J. D. Edwards Launches CRM 2.0,
Delivers 175 Product Enhancements Based on Customer Needs.
- Logistics Consulting Group, Inc. (LCG) announced that it has
