WMS vs ERP - The Battle Heats Up - Part 3

A WMS is required to perform more operational functionality than an ERP solution does. Our focus in part 3 is WMS 3PL functionality. Since many warehouses are "outsourced" to Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers - then the WMS solutions must provide the 3PL with a wide array of tools, options, parameters, and rules for client requirements. One 3PL warehouse may contain goods owned by 1 to 100 clients. Each client may have his own particular requirements!

3PL Product Ownership

Many WMS solutions are designed to segment inventory by owner id. When an order is received and processed, it will allocate inventory based on owner & part number.

Limited and/or Not Supported.
12
3PL Contract Rates

Some WMS solutions are designed for 3PL billing, which is customer based for storage and tasks. These WMS solutions permit multiple contracts & rates to be entered per product line & customer.

Not Supported.

Advanced 3PL Inventory Allocation Methods

Some WMS solutions have more than the basic LIFO, FIFO, and FEFO methods of inventory allocations. Some WMS solutions have more than 20 inventory allocation methods to satisfy customer requirements, which are a simple configuration by customer &/ product number. Configuration is done by an business analyst or CSR.

Not Supported.

Approximately 50 WMS solutions support 3PL functionality described above. To get that exhaustive list, plus details on private warehouse WMS solutions, order the Warehouse & Logistics Software Directory.

Feel free to mail Phil with your comments, suggestions, & ideas. Next time (part 4) goes into major functions & modules that differ between an WMS & ERP!

Technology & Software Product News

  • Cadre Technologies (WMS, TMS, OMS, 3PL) announces Advanced Web Order Entry. The new web storefront connects users directly to the Cadence Warehouse Management and Order Management systems to build orders, check order status and acquire product information. Cadence Web Order organizes customer specific product catalogs for users to search for and select products, add them to shopping carts, build quotes and orders, and check inventory availability. All product information, customer records, and inventory status is contained in the centralized Cadence database.

Cadence Web Order provides many features including catalog drill-downs, product images and style sheets, multiple shipping addresses/distribution lists, order templates for recurring orders, availability by either quantity or yes/no confirmation, electronic file items for distribution of documents, and complementary item/up-sale recommendation. It is highly configurable to allow variable themes and order rules for different clients and their customers.

  • Catalyst International Inc. (WMS, NASDAQ: CLYS) announced that Kunzler & Co., Inc. has selected Catalyst to manage its distribution centers. Meat processor will implement CatalystCommand™ to manage three distribution centers in Pennsylvania.
  • Drake Certivo Inc., a global provider of standards implementation acceleration products, announced the launch of its company's testing services designed to support the RosettaNet Ready(TM) Software Compliance Program, Drake Certivo has expanded its product line with the Jump-Start Solution Suite(TM), a comprehensive combination of tools, services and processes, to support implementation compliance for trading partners. Components include solution certification, trading partner certification, interoperability testing, Jump-Start testing and the Jump-Start Tool Kit.

  • EXE Technologies (Nasdaq:EXEED, WMS, 3PL) announced that it has taken a number of additional cost reduction actions. These actions include headcount reductions of approximately 50 employees, discretionary spending cuts, and other cost reductions throughout the company's global operations. The cost reductions are expected to reduce quarterly costs by over $2 million.
Editor's Note: EXE was #2 in the WMS community a few years back, but financial management has been lacking severely. Financial management is just as critical as having technically superior products. BOTH are required, but so many software companies only focus on the "product" and technical functionality.

  • GEOCOMtms (TMS) announced a breakthrough in Fleet routing & Scheduling with the addition of the “fuzzy zones” optimization to its flagship A.MAZE Route application. This allows customers to flex their zones in response to dynamic demand, thus maintaining the concept of territories while targeting highest asset utilization.

Traditional routing systems have forced users to define fixed zones with rigid boundaries. However, in real life, these boundaries may not be completely rigid. Most of the time, there exist overlaps between territories that can be beneficial. There is always a requirement to assign vehicles or drivers to specific territories, but depending on the volume of orders, the boundaries will move or flex. Defining this flexibility is a very efficient way to optimize assets’ allocation.”

  • Pitney Bowes to offer Integrated HazMat Solutions. Pitney Bowes announced a reseller agreement with Hazmat Software LLC of Longwood, Fla. • RedPrairie Corporation (WMS, TMS, LMS) announced release 2.0 of DLx® Integrator, its enterprise applications integration framework for logistics, with a graphical network monitor and embedded event management. New capabilities are:

    * Real-time, graphical network monitor - this unique capability allows users to see any transactional problems that exist across the network, with the ability to drill down to detect and repair the underlying problem. It provides a single console to enable IT staff to manage these transactional flows across the network.

    * Embedded event management - this function proactively notifies appropriate personnel if a transactional problem occurs (e.g. an interface to a material handling system is down or an order download with a data quality problem was detected) so that corrective action can be taken promptly. This will save operating costs by minimizing system down time and lost productivity due to bad data or disruption of information flow. These alerts can be communicated via multiple media, such email, pager, and cell phone, with easily configurable subscription, scheduling and escalation features.

  • SAMSys Technologies (RFID) has signed a VAR agreement with European-based Scanology, an Auto ID solutions provider for coding, printing, reading and verification. Scanology will fully implement SAMSys' technology at its facility in Boxmeer, Netherlands.
