WMS
Functionality vs ERP - Part Two
A WMS offers greater functionality for inventory, warehousing,
logistics, and transportation than an ERP solution does.
The WMS is expected to be up 24x7 as many warehouses run 3 shifts
7 days a week. This translates into little or no down time on
the computer equipment. The WMS must be up & ready to work
for a heavy operations & work force, that has high expectations
of readiness (up-time) for both the software and hardware involved.

6 |
Eliminate Down Time |
Most WMS solutions require no down time,
by online backups or dual databases. Warehouse operations
require 24x7. WMS solutions keep running, even while host
systems are being backed up. |
ERP systems require scheduled down time, as much as 10 to 15% during a
24 hour period. |
7 |
Bin Locator System |
WMS solutions have numerous data items to review in order to suggest a
bin for directed putaway. The bin locator system is parameter &/ rule
based, with data items coming from the product, bin, inventory, zone, area,
warehouse. |
Limited and/or Not Supported. |
8 |
Warehouse Task "Work Flow" |
Most WMS solutions provide work flow permitting configuration
to indicate the tasks that a product needs. One product needs to be pick-pack-ship
tasks, wherein another product requires pick-qa-repack-ship tasks. |
Not Supported. |
9 |
Work Centers |
Many WMS solutions have work center logic for value
added services including manufacturing, assembly, and repair.
FYI:
The host system (not the WMS) is expected to calculate
inventory costing based upon work done & recorded in
the WMS.
|
Supported in the MRP module. The MRP module handles inventory costing. |
10 |
RF Task Queue |
WMS solutions are designed for RF using a work task queue. This queue
directs workers in in an intelligent and optimized manner.
|
Limited and/or Not Supported. |
This wraps up Part Two. Expect the next article to be exciting
and quite revealing!
