WMS Functionality vs ERP

A WMS offers greater functionality for inventory, warehousing, logistics, and transportation than an ERP solution does. This article illustrates the differences of a Warehouse Management System in striking contrast to an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution.

No.
Function
WMS Functionality
ERP Functionality
1
Equipment Defintion Equipment defined with limitation concepts and user authorization for this equipment. WMS directs the right equipment through the right aisles at the right levels. E.G., Forklift. Limited and/or Not Supported..
2
Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Interfaces. WMS installations frequently interface to Carousels, AS/RS, Pick-to-Light, Put-to-Light, Sorters, Divertors, and other MHE equipment. WMS solution providers are experienced in these interfaces. Limited and/or Not Supported.
3
Dock Scheduling Many of the advanced WMS solution providers offer this functionality. Dock scheduling (inbound and outbound) supported for TL & LTL shipments. Not Supported.
4
Yard Management System Some WMS solutions offer a YMS. Specialized YMS solutions exist for interfacing to a WMS or ERP. Not Supported.
5
ERP Interfaces WMS has interfaces to multiple ERP solutions (the popular ERP solutions). The interface approach varies from EAI adaptors, middleware, or a WMS vendor's mapping tool. ERP solution is self contained to it's world. A few ERP providers are tapping into Enterprise Application Interfaces (EAI) adaptors or middleware.

It's important to 'know" what the "expected average " differences are between a WMS and an ERP! This is our goal - to inform - to educate - what those differences are. We realize that some ERP solutions are stronger than the average ERP solution in warehouse operations. It is your responsibility to wisely discern individual solutions on their merits - and not assume all package are alike - they are not. Use these functional differences as a check list - to evaluate - to have demonstrated - and to discuss.

This wraps up Part One. Expect the next article to be exciting and quite revealing!
