Techniques, Vision, & Educational Thoughts

WMS Requirements for 3PL, 3PW, & Public Warehousing

WMS functionality for 3rd Party Logistics providers is tough to provide! A smart WMS software vendor will first evaluate the "full set of 3PL functionality" and decide if the R&D investment of adding the 3PL functionality is worth it or not. With our clients, IDII has seen three categories of WMS solutions (in regards to 3PL functionality): (1) full 3PL functionality is targeted, (2) product ownership functionality only, and (3) no 3PL functionality in product nor planned. Note: we are including 3rd Party Warehousing, Public Warehousing, Contract Warehousing, and 3rd Party Logistics providers all in the term "3PL" since a 3PL WMS solution can service all of these operations.

Why Is 3PL WMS Functionality Tough?

Simply stated - The WMS must "double" the code & functionality when it goes from a non-3PL WMS to a 3PL WMS. Database changes & additions must be made to handle the following new functional items:

  • Product Ownership by Customer
  • Bin Locator Enhancements by Customer
  • Customer Preferences (Carriers, Reporting, Shared Data, Frequency)
  • Task Workflows based on Customer & His Product's Requirement
  • Contract Billing that is robust. (Like payroll taxes - every changing!)
  • Computations & entry of manual tasks, automated tasks, & storage.
  • EDI & XML data transactions to/from customer & his trading partners
  • Visibility of Customers Inventory, Inbound/Outbound Shipments....
  • Visibility of Customers Inventory to His Customer
  • Web based Order Entry System
  • Transportation Management System for Planning, Routing, Parcel, LTL, TL
  • Standard Interfaces to small to midsize ERP players

In addition to the 'normal set' of 3PL functionality required, a 3PL could be handling multiple verticals (frozen food, CPG, hazardous material, hardgoods, etc.). The WMS software must be capable of handling many verticals well. This is still a challenge for some of the 3PL WMS solutions today, as some of them have specialized on a few verticals only.

A 3PL that is looking for new 3PL WMS software has over 20 WMS solutions available today. Take the time to do a full "operational analysis" to see what is required today and in the future. Build or purchase a detailed WMS RFP with many 3PL questions in it. (See IDII's Advanced WMS RFI which includes many detailed 3PL questions). Time savings exist not only in the labor optimization within the warehouse, but also in Customer Service Reps (CSR's), and business analysts.

Final Insights

When a 3PL selects and implements a new software solution (WMS, TMS, EDI, OMS, more...) it could be a great success or failure to the 3PL. A 3PL makes it's living (profit) through it's labor force of warehousing and other activities. The new solution must be configured, exhaustively tested, and rolled out in a strategic plan. In this manner, one minimizes "go live" problems and a successful "go live" is greatly increased! See our white papers on WMS Testing, WMS Tips, & Project Management Tips.
