Supply Chain Execution Market Update"

Has the SCE software companies hit a wall? You bet! Matter of fact, there are 3 walls that most of these software firms can hit & frequently fail because of them! Let's name them - (1) Slowdown of software buying since September 11 has hurt earnings, (2) Failure to control debt leads to cash flow problems, and (3) Fragmented WMS & TMS markets by numerous players leave fall out (company failures) and consolidations of companies. There are over 200 standalone WMS solutions listed in our Edition 6 of the IDII Warehouse & Logistics Software Directory. This is a fragmented market.

Two reports have been issued on some of these walls discussed above. ARC issued a report showing the North America market took a significant beating (reason #1) around 12% where the worldwide market was only a 6% reduction. Major future growth is seen for the WMS market, especially outside of North America!

The second report is from a consultants view based in Europe. It is showing WMS players dropping out & consolidating. Read this consultant's WMS trend management report. A nice fresh perspective with useful project management & software insights.

Trend & Opinion

We will continue to see new software companies show up, a few of the current ones fail, and many of the current ones will consolidate. IDII's opinion is that we will continue these trends continue for all of 2002 & into 2003. For very recent proof of this - see the press releases on Catalyst taking over support for the Blackbird WMS and the SSA acquiring InterBiz supply chain products in this issue. That's called consolidation! Maybe Catalyst can turn the ship around with this new professional service (high profit) work.

Exhortation for Software Companies

Two MAJOR items that all software companies should do: 1 - Control & eliminate debt. When difficult times come, it is much easier to survive!! 2 - Market their company & products! Too many high tech companies are owned, operated, and marketed by "high tech" people. Must market - market - market! IDII estimates that 75% of the SCE companies fail to market themselves professionally and consistently!

Additional investors include LogiSpring Investment Fund SA of Brussels, Belgium, one of the funds managed by LogiSpring Management Company Sarl of Geneva, Switzerland; and Brentwood Venture Capital of Los Angeles, California, which is making its second investment in Apriso. Apriso Corporation (ERP, MRP, SCE, FY2000 USD 21 million) releases CIM+ Workflow Manager Built With Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. CIM+ Workflow Manager automates business workflows and responds to changes on the plant floor, in real-time. Workflows consist of tasks that are assignable to agents such as employees, work cells, machines and equipment. Communication between CIM+ Workflow Manager and the agents occurs asynchronously. The architecture distributes workloads optimally between multiple agents, and dynamically tracks and redistributes workloads as necessary, using business rules and an expert system to generate optimal solutions. This approach minimizes cycle times and maximizes industrial throughput by allowing complex production, warehousing and logistics tasks to be undertaken in parallel. CIM+ Workflow Manager is also capable of setting alarms and alerting personnel whenever human intervention is necessary.

Workflow Manager utilizes Microsoft .NET Enterprise Servers, ADO.NET and XML Web services to support transactional and data access mechanisms that are flexible. Apriso developers report numerous benefits from Microsoft Visual Studio.NET, including the utilities for deployment of Microsoft .NET assemblies; enforcement of coding standards; intelligent real-time definition of classes and class references; wizards for automatically generating ADO database interfaces; and tight integration with Microsoft Visio, allowing round-trip engineering between design and implementation. Apriso developers also reported ease of use for development applications in Microsoft Visual C# .NET.
