Load Optimization - Cartonization

The Cadence Container Packaging Assistant (CPA) is an advanced cartonization module and is designed to work in conjunction with the Cadence WMS and TMS systems. This advanced cartonization module is used to allocate picks to pre-defined box types through the box building process. Cadence Label Manager provides the Warehouse administrator with a means to manage the printing of shipping labels and the assignment of inventory for these boxes.

The CPA module allows for multiple box types to be defined in the system. Each box type contains characteristics that allow the system to calculate the product and quantities to be assigned to each shipping container. The cartonization module takes into consideration the total quantity of an item being shipped, the sku (item) characteristics, and the orientation of the sku in the box. The cartonization algorithm uses the seven degrees of freedom for a rectangular item in determining the orientation of the sku in the shipping container. It determines the number of boxes and the box sizes to be used when packing an order. Box weight is also captured.

When the administrator releases a batch of picks the Label Manager application works with Cadence TMS to pick the proper carrier and generate the proper carrier shipping labels for each box in the pick batch. The TMS system evaluates the shipping criteria for the order and selects the carrier that provides the most cost effective way of shipping the product that meets the customers expectations. The criteria that is evaluated is carrier preference, shipping date and time, weight of merchandise to be shipped, number and size of packages to be shipped, and shipping origination and destination points. After evaluation of the criteria the Cadence TMS system will make assignment of the customer order to the most cost effective carrier and generate carrier compliant shipping labels to be applied to the shipping cartons.

Cadence CPA and TMS modules working with one another allows the distributor / fulfillment company to accurately pick, pack, and ship customer orders in the most cost effective way.

Editor's Note: We thank Cadre Technologies for sharing this information. IDII advises clients to investigate & utilize Pick-to-carton solutions, when the company is performing piece picking & packing cartons. The algorithms utilized in "load optimization" must use product information & volumetrics. These algorithms can be complex! We welcome short educational articles & white papers from companies in the SCE & SCM verticals.

  • EXE Technologies (WMS, 3PL, YMS, Nasdaq:EXEE) announce new EXceed(TM) Data Exchange software solution. EXceed Data Exchange is a J2EE compliant application that supports secure communications over the Internet and private networks. Customers will be able to use standard EXceed Data Exchange communication and transformation capabilities to integrate EXE applications with popular applications from other enterprise software vendors.

"Over 90% of e-Commerce transactions are via EDI formats. EXceed Data EXchange enables trading partners to eliminate VAN charges by using secure Internet protocols for transactions. Richard Lackey, chief technology officer for EXE. "EXceed Data Exchange seamlessly handles legacy EDI formats as well as XML, and utilizes widely accepted messaging and security standards. We understand that no enterprise system today can survive if it exists in a silo of its own data. Instead, integrated solutions are necessary to expedite the flow of goods through the supply chain."

  • Cadre Technologies (WMS, TMS, OMS) announced new module, Cadence Container Packing Assistant (CPA). This new module helps distributors and fulfillment companies plan packing, picking, box sizes, shipping weights and costs for each order. It is built to coordinate order, product and shipping information with Cadence Warehouse Management System (WMS), Order Management System (OMS) and Transportation Management System (TMS). For more details - See Main Article.

  • Logistics.com Inc. (TMS) announced new versions of OptiYield Driver&Load 6.0 and Drop&Swap
    3.0
, real-time truckload motor carrier optimization solutions. Driver&Load locks in the best possible assignments of drivers to loads while maximizing utilization, and then Drop&Swap monitors dispatched trucks to find definite opportunities for service improvements at low cost.

Drop&Swap includes three components. The first is ETA Monitor, which tracks the progress of enroute trucks and notifies the carrier of jeopardized deliveries. The second is Swap Finder, which suggests enroute swaps to solve jeopardized deliveries or driver get-home commitments. The third, Capacity Creator, finds enroute drivers with extra time on their loads who may be able to assist with pickup and delivery runs around terminals or rail yards. Another new feature of Drop&Swap 3.0 is on-demand swapping. Now, any customer service representative or dispatcher can instantly call up recommendations to get any driver home, rescue a late delivery or provide capacity to move a load to or from a customer's yard.

  • McHugh Software International, Inc.(WMS, TMS, LMS, SCV, SCEM) Announces LENSä 3.0 with Complete "Order to Delivery" Visibility and Event Management. This new release adds "cradle to grave" shipment visibility, roles-based collaborative processing, and sophisticated event management capabilities to a system already known for its extensive order and inventory visibility. The result is complete order to delivery visibility and process management across the supply network. LENSä 3.0 incorporates McHugh's new event management technology.

For example, a supplier might enter shipment information which is visible to the customer. During shipment, the carrier can provide shipment status, including notification that the shipment will arrive late. The event management system detects this late shipment "event" and pro-actively informs the customer, who enters a new receiving schedule. Upon shipment arrival, the carrier or customer can provide proof of delivery confirmation, thus closing the order processing loop. McHugh's LENSä visibility system is pre-integrated with McHugh's industry leading warehouse, labor and transportation management solutions, and is easily integrated with non-McHugh systems through open application program interfaces (API's).

  • McHugh Software International, Inc.(WMS, TMS, LMS, SCV, SCEM) announced the release of a powerful new Event Management (SCEM) infrastructure. McHugh's event management system provides configurable event definition and automated response workflow for all of McHugh's DigitaLogistixä components, including warehouse management, transportation management, labor management and supply chain visibility. Events can also be accepted from other systems, providing a global view of operations. Once events are detected at the execution level, McHugh's event management system can provide notification by telephone, pager, fax, and e-mail, and can initiate automated response workflow in McHugh's execution components or through outside systems. Events can also be automatically escalated and require acknowledgement to ensure problems are addressed on a timely basis.

McHugh is also introducing "ALx," a configurable alert icon that notifies the appropriate manager or supervisor that an alert or exception condition has occurred, and displays the appropriate severity level. When a user clicks on the icon, they are taken directly to the event to review or update the predefined response, or initiate other corrective action. This enables immediate problem resolution not available in current SCEM systems.
