New Book! "Warehousing Tips" - by Ken Ackerman

Over 300 tips that anyone who has anything to do with warehousing should have at their fingertips!
This book is a tool for managers, team leaders, third-party administrators…everyone from new hires to presidents. Its twelve chapters present ideas about hiring, training, safety, technology, operations improvement, facilities, layout, third-party warehousing, strategy, corporate management and career management. It closes with a series of handy checklists. Here's what warehousing professionals have to say about Warehousing Tips:

"Ackerman's new book offers a world of experience and great guidance for the new team leaders and team members in any warehouse operation." - Jesse Westburgh, Distribution Services Manager, Florida's Natural Growers

"It is rare to find so much accumulated wisdom about the warehousing industry in one place. This book presents information in a way that both the warehousing pro and the aspiring pro can understand and apply." - Bernard J. LaLonde, Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University

"Although the information provided in Warehousing Tips is outstanding and of great value to anyone involved directly with the warehousing industry, I find the format Ackerman uses to present the information to be of the greatest value. All too often, authors present important information, but construct their books in such a way as to make it difficult to go back and reference specific sections or ideas. Ackerman's approach of presenting information under easy-to-locate topical headings makes the information readily available to the manager - time and time again." - F. Douglas Reardon, President, Excel Project Management.

Software Company News

  • Arzoon (TMS) and TIBCO Software Inc. announce alliance to deliver integration between Arzoon LIFE and other back office and front office systems. Arzoon is a web-native logistics solution that unifies international trade logistics, transportation management and inventory visibility on a single platform.
The Arzoon LIFE family of LRM solutions is a unified suite of applications including Arzoon
Transportation LIFE and Arzoon Global Trade LIFE that together solve complex supply chain challenges. The software offers functionality in transportation procurement, optimization, execution, tracking, freight payment, reporting, global trade compliance, and inventory visibility. Arzoon LIFE enables organizations to collaboratively manage logistics with trading partners, thereby reducing costs and providing a competitive advantage.

  • BridgePoint (TMS) announced accelerated return-on-investment (ROI) for NaviPact, their ocean contracting solution, by eliminating the clients need to implement or configure the solution prior to use. The announcement coincides with BridgePoint's formal launch of NaviPact and gives users instant access to BridgePoint's robust ocean contracting functionality.

As a web-based ocean contracting application, NaviPact provides immediate relief to clients searching for a better way to create, manage and review global ocean contracts. It streamlines the collaboration between shippers and carriers and provides a neutral, mutually beneficial platform for managing the entire negotiation process.

  • EXE Technologies (WMS, 3PL, YMS, Nasdaq:EXEE) announce new product EXceed(TM) Yard, a yard management software application that enables more effective inventory, asset, and labor management.

EXceed Yard extends inventory visibility into trailers and expands control of the distribution center to the boundaries of the yard, helping to increase customer service levels, revenues, and inventory productivity. Orders can now be filled using inventory that has yet to be unloaded from the trailers - or trailers containing hot inventory can take priority for unloading. EXceed Yard also reduces spoilage of temperature-sensitive products by alerting personnel of the need to re-fuel climate controlled trailers.

To maximize trailer utilization and reduce unnecessary detention or demurrage charges, EXceed Yard tracks the location, dimensions, owner, and count of all trailers within all the enterprises' yard operations. Trailers can be tracked using RFID technology or through the windows-based product. EXceed Yard also manages trailer maintenance schedules to ensure the fleet is in good working condition. All trailer and driver event information - including arrival time, location, unloading, return to yard, loading, and departure - is captured and maintained for performance analysis and billing verification.

EXceed Yard's task management functionality can also be extended to meet the needs of complex yard operations through task linking. EXceed Yard finds trailers matching user-defined criteria and links together multiple tasks to create task dependencies that further automate the task management process. Task Assignment in EXceed Yard is RF enabled to eliminate costly recording, keying, and verbal communication errors. Through a preconfigured integration with EXceed Fulfill WMS, the Yard system will automatically generate move tasks for putaway of empty trailers or bring empty trailers to the dock for loading.

  • Valdero Corporation (SCEM) announced Valdero 1.5, the newest version of its flagship application suite. Valdero makes it possible for companies to dramatically reduce manufacturing costs and liabilities through management of extended supply chain execution.

The Valdero Supply Chain Control Suite comprises five applications that allow businesses to dramatically reduce inventory, production and process costs by giving them greater visibility into and control over the supply chain:

    1. Valdero Demand continuously monitors demand variability by correlating orders with forecasts, and offers guidance for optimal inventory levels.
    2. Valdero Inventory improves inventory management by monitoring shortages and liability against orders and supplier delivery.
    3. Valdero LifeCycle offers Engineering Change Order (ECO) analysis when products change, including guidance on when to cut in ECOs.
    4. Valdero Order continuously tracks responsiveness to customers through key operational indicators such as on time complete shipments, and provides guided resolution for allocation issues.
    5. Valdero SupplyBase supports close management of supply chain execution by monitoring CM and supplier performance and contractual obligations.

  • V3 Systems (WMS) and Clicklogistics (TMS) form alliance to offer a combined WMS & TMS solution. The two companies together offer continuous supply chain synchronicity, from the inbound handling of raw materials, to materials storage and crossdocking, to order fulfillment, and to outbound delivery of products to customers.

"There is real value in alliances between WMS and TMS suppliers, like the one between V3 Systems and Clicklogistics," said Steve Banker, Director of Supply Chain Research, ARC Advisory Group. Clicklogistics TMS will use information generated by V3 Systems WMS to fuel its Web-native TMS, called Clicklogistics Online. The system's features save shippers money on both the cost of purchased transportation and the cost of transportation management. Clicklogistics offers fast payback by eliminating upfront license fees and by selling its TMS in an unbundled format, allowing customers to buy pieces of functionality for less than the price of the entire system.

Users of Clicklogistics will be able to take advantage of V3 System's new Web-based supply chain visibility system, the "V3 Dashboard," to allow anyone with a secure login to view supply chain information, key performance measurements, and the disposition of shipments from anywhere they have access to a Web browser. V3 Dashboard uses the latest encryption technology in a Web-based tool that provides secure deployment of the V3 System information over the Internet, using custom multi-level views for authorized users, e.g. executive; management; operational; customer service; and customer. The information displayed on the V3 Dashboard is accessed directly from the system database and the system history database.
