Techniques, Vision, & Educational
Thoughts
Review of "Rick Duris' Systems Integrators Notebook"
I wish I had this book 20 years ago! If there every was
a book that should be on every IT manager, company manager, systems
integrator, and consultants' desk, this is the book. It should
be read, reviewed, studied, and passed out to their employees
and clients - as this book will make one successful - if you follow
the advice contained in it!
Rick Duris'
System Integrator's Notebook is a book of tips and techniques
on how to successfully implement
software & hardware & people. Whether one is implementing
a WMS, TMS, ERP, Bar Coding, MRP, or E-Commerce system - one should
take solid advice from those that have done it. Rick is one of
those that have "done" it - a practitioner and a popular
speaker on Supply Chain Execution software as well. He writes
in a conversational mode.
The format of this book
is a series of articles focusing on various topics of system integration,
such as .....Dealing with problems right away before they become
mountains...Listening to the users...Prototypes will validate your
assumptions & vision...Testing will "insure" your production success.
Approximately 50 topics of system integration & project management are
covered. One way to increase major project implementation is to have
"commitment" from management, supervisors, and the workers.
Rick also goes into the
other factors for successful implementation, from momentum, traction,
contribution from users, and the psychology factor. The Psychology Is More
Important Than The Technology. Psychology is defined as the attitudes, perceptions,
values, beliefs, and perspectives of anyone coming into contact with you,
your project, and the system will ultimately contribute to whether your
system is considered a success or failure.
We recommend
that you and fellow professionals get a copy of this book -- as
we can relate to many of the valuable lessons that Rick is sharing.
If you are expecting a notebook that is full of tips and advice
- you are going to be very satisfied.

Software Company News
- Logility (WMS, TMS, APS, B2B, Nasdaq: LGTY) Delivers the Industry's First Multi-tiered
CPFR Solution.
According to Logility - To date, CPFR programs have only supported the
collaborative relationship between two companies in a buyer/seller
relationship such as retailer and supplier. Last year the VICS CPFR
Committee extended the buyer/seller business process to include multiple
trading partners in an extended supply chain network, such as retailer,
distributor, and manufacturer. For example, consumer-based demand plans,
point-of-sale (POS) data, and promotion schedules offer valuable insight
for distributors and manufacturers and collaboration creates a shared
responsibility between these trading partners to meet specific consumer
demand. Voyager Collaborate delivers a single collaborative framework
to automate and streamline the business processes between multiple
trading partner companies. Additionally, Voyager Collaborate enables
any organization to efficiently and effectively collaborate with both
its customers and suppliers through integrated alert-based exception
management.
Voyager Collaborate
Release now provides:
* Greater inventory reduction, revenue expansion and customer service
improvement through its unique ability to explicitly model two, three or
more tiers of a supply chain into a single, automated collaborative
relationship.
* Secure support for sharing mission critical information such as demand
plans, point-of-sale (POS) data, promotion schedules and category plans
between all strategic partners to synchronize business plans and optimize
each trading partner's operations.
* Flexible alert-based exception management and resolution built upon
Logility's Value Chain Workflow technology that supports true
collaborative business processes throughout a multi-tiered supply chain.
* Expanded dynamic, web-based "Pyramid Explorer" that allows
each trading partner to access and interrogate data from a top-down,
bottom-up, and middle-out perspective.
- Manhattan
(WMS, TMS, Nasdaq: MANH) announces Integration Of Full Transportation
Management Into their WMS product PkMS. The TMS features in PkMS now
include:
- Load Planning and
Optimization
for efficient shipping plans. PkMS users can now more fully optimize a
carrier's equipment, ensuring that a truck is filled to capacity or is
stocked with deliveries targeted for a particular geographic location.
- International Compliance and
Global Shipping Documentation and Labeling for the automatic creation of export
documentation required for exports from the U.S. PkMS will translate
the document headings into local languages to satisfy compliance
requirements of the destination countries.
- Rating Shopping for better
freight rates. With PkMS, users can easily identify the most cost-effective
shipping method through the ability to rate shop and determine zone
skipping and freight pooling opportunities. PkMS automatically weighs
all factors to determine the most efficient carrier, taking into
consideration variables such as time constraints, to offer all shipping
options that meet the customer delivery requirements.
- Additional features include Vendor
and Carrier Compliance, Online Shipping Inquiries and Automated Audits,
Payments and Analysis.
- McHugh Software (WMS, TMS, Sql Server, 3PL) announced
DLx*
Warehouse/D release 5.1, with significant new capabilities to support postponement
strategies and make-to-order logistics. Specific capabilities include
enhanced functionality for work order processing, multi-level
bill-of-material management, kitting and de-kitting, order explosion,
and assemble-to-order production. The new release also adds support
for SQL Server as one of its database offerings, providing customers the
option for a full Microsoft solution in addition to other system
configurations.
"For many industries, make-to-order logistics and postponement
capabilities are emerging as critical supply chain competencies,"
said Steve Banker, Director of Supply Chain Solutions for ARC Advisory Group.
“Warehouse management vendors are increasingly being differentiated by
their ability to support these new process models in the DC."
- Vertex Interactive, Inc., (WMS,
TMS, Java, 3PL, NASDAQ:VETX), has released v3.5 of eWMS, its JAVA-architected
warehouse management solution. Release v3.5's additional functional
benefits target food manufacturers and distributors that require
operational management of inventory that includes perishable,
refrigerated and frozen food items. The major functions added or
enhanced by v3.5 are: flexible item code date tracking; minimum
dating requirements; item shelf-life control; distressed product
tracking; multiple user-defined QA rules; outbound ``catch-weight''
processing; enhanced pallet and carton tracking, blast freezer
processing control; advanced ``dock door'' control and putaway rules;
dynamic forward pick assignment; repacks; work-queue management, and
integration of food functionality to 3PL processing functionality
available in previous releases.
Vertex's
eWMS is capable of multi-industry/warehouse/facility/owner/ company/division
functionality and can be deployed in a manual, RF-based environment, or any
combination of both. eWMS benefits hasten the enterprise ``ROI'' by providing
solutions that promote active messaging, event driven and web-based
processing, real-time visibility of data throughout the enterprise network,
integrated order/warehouse/inventory/transportation and ``light directed
system'' functionality.
