Techniques, Vision, & Educational Thoughts
"Should You Make or Buy A WMS?"
WMS packages have improved over the last
5 years significantly. Without a doubt, there
is a wide range of functional differences
between the WMS packages, but one now has
a large selection of choices. In our IDII
Warehouse & Software Directory, we list
approximately 300 solutions in WMS, including
a few ERP players with a WMS offering. As
a consulting firm, we highly recommend to
clients that they "BUY" an existing
WMS/ERP solution, rather than "build"
one. Here are the reasons why:
1. This is a "superman" feat - to
build a complicated WMS, which does scheduling of shipments, best
location for stock, multiple picking strategies,
and multiple allocation techniques. A WMS
is one of the most highly interfaced software
systems in existence. Sophisticated logic
is utilized in multiple places. One could
fail in the "build" of the WMS
package.
2. Failure to leverage other people's ongoing
R&D. Software companies are RAPIDLY improving
their products at a fast rate today. Buying
into a WMS product lets your leverage new
features and new functions. IT departments
are being asked to do more and more - so
"leverage" every opportunity that
you can.
3. Installation speed is compromised = EQUALS
= large reduction in ROI. If one can "implement" within
6 months or less, it will be done by buying
a package. Building will require approximately
a year - plus more - to deliver phase one
- two - three - eventually giving the full
set of functionality.
OUR VOTE? BUY A PACKAGE!
Do a thorough search of software so you can
"leverage" other peoples work.
IDII has products and services to help.
If your company wants to modify the code,
then realize the positive and negative aspects
of it. Positive aspect is that you have the
source code, can choose who makes modifications,
and can choose to stay on support long-term
or not. Negative aspect to modifications
is that too many modifications make it expensive
to retrofit to the next release (and the
next release). Too many modifications are
defined as 1000 man-hours or more. Keep your
modifications to a manageable amount! If one is organized, it is possible to make
custom modifications in-house (or by the
software vendor) AND stay on the upgrade
path.
Conclusion: Buy an existing package. Stay
with solution providers that are adding functionality
to their systems frequently. Also, If you want to make your own modifications
(or own the source), make that a big issue
from the very beginning of the software selection
process. State it multiple times and often.
Make it clear, who will do the modifications,
and what are the support policies for standard
& customized code.
