"A Treasury of Warehouse Knowledge"

Review of NEW CD from Howard Way

If you are into warehousing, then a new set of information is now available for you. Loaded with approximately 240 in depth articles on product profiling, labor management, warehouse software, e-commerce shipping, space utilization, and more. The author is Art Liebeskind, a respected consultant and warehouse educator with more than thirty years experience. Twenty years of articles have been brought together (from the Howard Way Newsletter, a monthly publication) into this CD. We received the CD, and tried it on two separate PC's. Everything worked just fine. One may select any of the articles. The search engine and articles are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format - which means that the original page layouts (including pictures, diagrams, and illustrations) are kept intact. PDF format is very popular and an accepted technology.

I enjoyed reviewing the article from "Benchmark Resources and Budget Planning Model" - which discussed resource profiling software from Vision Logistics (with screen snapshots and the author's valuable insights). Pallet Patterns From A Computer also was detailed and educational. Practical advice is offered - article after article. This would be a nice tool to ramp up one's knowledge in both warehousing and technology that is available for the warehouse. The author has a technology background and it shows.

Who would this help? Those in operations, warehouse management, logistics professionals, software developers, and company executives involved in warehousing. This is a well-rounded series of warehouse articles from a practitioners viewpoint. Software companies, consulting firms, and warehouse professionals would benefit from this CD - which could be use as a training tool - to increase one's personal knowledge of warehousing. Cost is $295 - Available from Howard Way Associates - www.howardway.com Phone is 410-542-4446.

  • Provia Software (APS, OMS, WMS, TMS, 3PL) - Announced new supply chain visibility product, VIAWARE ViaView, as part of the company's VIAWARE suite. ViaView utilizes Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000. ViaView utilizes the soon to be released BizTalk Server 2000 which provides the necessary tools to conduct business over the web using XML, and to process that content internally within ViaView. "Provia is taking advantage of leading-edge XML products and technologies such as BizTalk Server 2000 and the BizTalk Framework,

Unique among supply chain intelligence systems, ViaView allows users to view data using information they know, such as product or customer number; the ability to subscribe to information and events to make proactive decisions and manage by exception; and the ability to review historical data from their entire supply chain. The historical data can then be used as an accurate way to improve operations. "ViaView will be the standard other companies will follow when it comes to visibility tools," says Todd Gage of Provia Software.

    • Global Visibility - ViaView links an organizations global supply chain. All Provia products, including the same product in several locations, update ViaView with real-time execution activity information. Non-Provia systems can also be linked to ViaView for even more visibility.
    • Notification (B-2-B, B-2-C, and B-2-E) - ViaView keeps customers, suppliers and internal employees notified of important events. For example, automatically informing a supplier to restock inventory will be as easy as configuring an event.
    • In addition to event notification, one of the most powerful aspects of ViaView is the ability for non-event notifications. With non-event notification, an organization can be informed real-time when important events fail to happen. This allows for corrections to be made before the customer ever knows there was a problem.
    • Operational Performance - Events coupled with key performance indicators (KPIs) can keep supervisors automatically informed as to the performance of operations. This includes comparing facility to facility, shift to shift, or even worker to worker. Supervisors could also subscribe to how many picks per employee are occurring at a facility, and be notified when rates fall below the particular threshold.

  • Provia Software (WMS, TMS, 3PL) - Announced that Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE: R), a leader in logistics and transportation management solutions worldwide, has signed a global licensing agreement with Provia. With this agreement, Ryder will use Provia's VIAWARE suite as a software solution for its warehouse and distribution facilities worldwide, particularly in the high-tech industry offering

EDITOR'S Note: In our reading and filtering of news we usually skip "company wins" type of news. This one is very significant though - as Ryder is a large and well known in the 3PL community. Having solid 3PL functionality within the WMS/LES solution requires a tremendous amount of detailed functionality - especially if the 3PL are servicing hundreds or thousands of customers, their inventory, and their shipments.
    Read on..

Fortune magazine ranked Ryder as the most admired company in the highway transportation industry in 1997 and 1998 and second-most admired in 1999. In 2000, Ryder received a higher overall rating than any of its competitors in the Fortune survey. For the second consecutive year, Inbound Logistics magazine recognized Ryder in 1999 as the top third-party logistics provider.

  • TBB Global Logistics becomes US alliance for Radcliffe Systems (WMS). The Radcliffe Operation Control (WMS) product will be based on the Application Service Provider (ASP) model, where Radcliffe hosts the ROC application and data on a dedicated server, freeing customers from making a capital expenditure because Radcliffe buys the server and hardware and supplies clients the entire system for one monthly fee. Customers are also able to access ROC via the Internet.

This alliance will allow TBBGL clients to manage their warehouse more cost-effectively. "Most WMS ASP providers’ monthly leasing fees cover only the software utilization," said Samuel Polakoff, President of TBBGL. "Radcliffe’s approach creates an affordable monthly payment encompassing the utilization of the software, hardware, communication devices and the hand-held radio frequency units to be utilized by warehouse personnel." Editor's Note: Today, more than any other time, WMS Software companies need to be innovative in their pricing models that are offered to customers.
