1st Quarter, 2000 ERP Report Card: Transition of Growth or Decline?
For some Application Software Vendors, the 1st Quarter of the calendar year 2000 will either reflect turnaround growth or concerning decline in the key metrics. The key milestone of Y2K has now come and gone. Most analysts and all ASVs predicted turnaround growth in all of the key metrics for 2000. However, for many Vendors, the growth has yet to appear; and to some, the flat to declining numbers spell tumultuous waters ahead for employees and investors.
Let us look at some of the leading Larger and Midmarket ERP Application Vendors today to evaluate their Report Card performance for the 1st Quarter.
- SAP (SAP), Larger Enterprise leader, announced their earnings on 4/19/00 with a 43% decline in Net Income and a slight increase in overall Revenue. In addition, Kevin McKay, President and CEO of SAP North America, resigned from the company, adding to the executive exodus over the last few months.
- Oracle (ORCL), an e-Business powerhouse (Gartner Leader Quadrant for Larger Enterprises), announced their earnings last month with an increase in both Net Income (82% increase) and overall Revenue (15% increase) respectively. In addition, application license revenue grew at a decent pace (24.32 Price/Sales Ratio—Highest Ratio of all (7) ASVs).
- J.D. Edwards (JDEC) showed in late February’s Earnings release 20% increase in License Revenue growth and a jump in overall Revenue. J.D. Edwards’ original CEO—Ed McVaney—has now joined his original post for the company. We should expect more of the same numbers for next month’s earnings announcement (1.9 Price/Sales Ratio).
- Peoplesoft (PSFT) expects next week (4/25/00) to announce flat revenues with a slight profit of $5 MUSD for the 1st Quarter. Peoplesoft is also trading at a Price/Sales ratio of 2.94. Peoplesoft’s biggest challenge for 2000 is integrating the Vantive CRM suite into its own applications and exploiting the CRM “hot” space.
- Baan (BAANF), with the resignation of CEO Mary Coleman a few months past and the tremendous losses in Revenue and Profits, expects more of the same for the 1Q numbers: ~$20 MUSD loss and declining revenues (1.6 Price/Sales ratio). ·
- Symix (SYMX) shocked the investment community with an early announcement of disappointing earnings (2) weeks ago. With analysts expecting a profit of ten cents, the company stated they expect revenues to be flat with a loss of $1-2 MUSD. Stephen Sasser, President and CEO, also stated that the company may have been too optimistic about demand for rebound past Y2K (0.53 Price/Sales ratio).
- Epicor (EPIC) by far has multiple Applications in its bag of tricks, yet instability with reference to its ST and LT Product strategy has slowed its growth and hindered their ability to exploit the Midmarket. Epicor and the Analysts additionally expect flat revenues with an approximate loss of $4 MUSD with official numbers to be later released on 4/28. Additionally, Epicor announced a 10% layoff in early 1st Quarter to offset growing expenses. Finally, Epicor’s SVP of Sales—Ken Lally—resigned from the company in the last (2) weeks (0.74 Price/Sales ratio).
The above was a brief glance at the Top (5) Larger Enterprise vendors and (2) of the top Midmarket vendors. Even Symix was just recently added to Gartner’s Leader Quadrant to join J.D. Edwards for their 1H, 2000 Midmarket Magic Quadrant update. In the realm of the Larger Enterprise ASVs, Oracle, and J.D. Edwards seem to be posturing for market share growth from their competition for the remainder of 2000--Baan, Peoplesoft, and SAP. Time will tell for all (7) of these vendors in respect to who will be standing and how far ahead they are at the end of this year.

Scripture to Ponder
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.
