Fundamentals of Supply Chain Management

An Essential Guide for the 21st Century Manager. This book does a wonderful job to ramp up new professionals and managers to the important issues in the supply chain. Forty-two topics are covered rapidly with good insights, from the two highly educated authors. One may order this book from CSCMP at https://cscmp.org/cscmpStore/default.asp?XX=1

Fundamentals of Supply Chain Management - Ackerman

A bit of wholesome humor is poured into the book, which is greatly appreciated in its 224 pages. For example:

• “There are whole books devoted to discussions of ROP, EOQ, MAD, and FIFO as well as our favorite acronyms, FISH (First In, Still Here) and LID (Last In, Disappeared).
• A humorous and educational picture is shown with each of the 42 topics, which actually have a point and a thought.
• Regarding software vendor selection… the last question of the list is “If things don’t work out, how do we unscramble the eggs?”

Excellent advice is given throughout the book. Regarding a 3PL relationship - “You and the LSP need to engage in regular dialogue about where and how they can add value to what you are doing.” Regarding a consultant – “ … The quality of relationships with consultants can have a profound effect on the quality and extent of outcomes. For best results, mutual trust and open communication are required. The more your consultants know about …”.

Software providers are discussed. “As for software providers, they are often portrayed as upscale used-car salespeople, without scruple or inhibition. That’s unfair. When it comes to evaluating vendors, your job is to look for and access the qualities that can make for a positive mutual relationship, all the way through a successful implementation.

Every aspect of transportation, procurement, warehousing, metrics, and logistics is covered. From ergonomics to management mindsets to inventory control and RFID technology, this publication covers the full scope of the supply chain. I wish I was given this publication during my first job (IT Manager at a wholesaler) in the supply chain. It would have helped me significantly to understand the many issues that customer service, purchasing, warehousing, and the traffic department were facing. In this manner, you “know” the issues in order to help facilitate results. Reviewed by Phil Obal

Descartes Unveiling Intelligent Automatic Vehicle Locator Wireless Services.“Descartes’ AVL offerings do much more than simply provide visibility into shipment arrivals at a customer’s door,” said Chris Jones, Executive Vice President, Solutions and Services at Descartes. “By integrating on-demand route planning and optimization with real-time visibility, dispatchers and customer service staff gain access to a Web-based view of delivery status in real-time. It also provides rapid notification of critical events affecting deliveries, enabling operators to make customer-focused decisions on routes and delivery reservations in real-time to reduce costs, streamline operations, and ensure consistent quality of service.” Descartes AVL provides field data updates and tracking in real-time, from basic GPS coordinates to more complex black-box engine diagnostics. With the depth of data provided, operators can also measure delivery performance against planned routes, and notify dispatch and/or customer service operations of changes made during the delivery cycle.
